What determines the cost of garden maintenance
- Size of the areas: lawn in square metres, hedges in running metres and height, beds
- Frequency: regular, planned maintenance is usually cheaper than rare, large jobs, because the garden does not have to be "rescued" every time.
- Access: can machines drive up to the area, or does everything have to be carried through the house?
- Green waste: amount and disposal of cuttings
- Starting condition: an overgrown garden needs more work at the start.
What determines the cost of new gardens and paths
- Earthworks: excavation, soil improvement and removing soil are often a large, underestimated item.
- Material: there are big differences between simple concrete pavers and natural stone. The size of the plants also has a clear effect on the price.
- Sub-base and drainage: a load-bearing sub-base with a slope costs more than a quick solution, but lasts longer.
- Lawn: turf costs more than seed, but can be used sooner.
- Disposal: old surfaces, tree stumps, rubble
Comparing quotes properly
Quotes are only comparable if they describe the same thing. Check that areas and quantities are stated, that material and build-up are described, that disposal and travel are included or shown separately, and that it is clear what is not included. A strikingly low price may mean savings on the sub-base or missing items.
Tax bonus under § 35a EStG
Private households can deduct part of the labour costs for work in their household directly from their income tax (as of November 2026):
- Household-related services such as regular garden maintenance (mowing the lawn, cutting hedges, removing leaves) or winter service on the property: 20 percent of labour costs, at most 4,000 euros tax reduction per year – this maximum applies jointly with other household-related services.
- Tradespeople's services such as redesigning an existing garden or paving a terrace: 20 percent of labour costs, at most 1,200 euros tax reduction per year.
The requirements are an invoice showing labour and material costs separately, and payment by bank transfer. Cash payments are not recognised. Work as part of a new build does not qualify for the tradespeople's bonus. Tenants and flat owners can claim their share from the service-charge or annual statement if the costs are shown there. Whether and to what extent this applies to you is best clarified with your tax adviser.
